BC Predicts: January Baby Bargain Forecast

Baby Cheapskate predicts that January will bring:

  • After-Christmas toy clearance continues through the 15th. Stock your gift closet with the hot toys from 2009 at rock-bottom prices.
  • Valentines Day sales should begin mid-month at photo printing and gift retailers like Shutterfly and Snapfish. Last year saw 50% off on photo cards, 20% off photo mugs and more.
  • Great finds at thrift stores, Freepeats, Freecycle, and Craigslist. Folks like to clear clutter as the year ends, leaving lots for second-hand bargain hunters to choose from this month.
  • Look for great coupons for Kimberly-Clark (Huggies) products around the middle of the month with extra incentives and sales (especially at drug stores).
  • Fabulous ExtraCare deals at CVS help you stock up on toiletries, meds, and paper products cheaply (mid month).
  • Winter clearance continues, with the best deals on the warmest clothes–outerwear, sweaters, and fleece. Expect 50% off. Last year Old Navy went to 50% off clearance just after mid-month.
  • You’ll find shoe deals galore as stores begin to try to get rid of winter items. Expect a couple of good coupon codes from places like Shoebuy.com and Shoes.com (Just Google “ShoeBuy coupon” or “Shoes.com coupon” to find them) as well as full clearance shelves.
  • The Monster Sale at The Childrens Place continues with the best deals at the end of the sale. Expect coupon codes of 15% to 20% off. (Just Google “Childrens Place coupon” to find them.)
  • 2009 saw a 20% off coupon for the REI.com outlet, where Baby Jogger strollers were already on sale. BOB, too.

Look ahead: Those massive kiddie consignment sales at churches will start up in mid February.

Recipe of the Week: Pumpkin Cream Cheese Truffles

I know, I know…I could have posted this when everyone was baking all their Christmas cookies, right? Sorry. But, really, this is a recipe that I will gladly make any time of the year. And, considering the rave reviews from Hubs (who doesn’t even like pumpkin), I’m sure he won’t mind eating them!

Believe it or not I found this recipe on the Whole Foods website! In all it’s yummy-ness, it’s most definitely a sweet treat and would be a great tag along to any get together.

The ‘truffle’ mixture was a little softer than I think I envisioned, but they were heavenly anyway. I used a high-quality white chocolate, which you could easily find at some after Christmas sales going on. And, since we’re Nyaker gingersnap addicts, I used those as the crumbly spicy addition.

Serious yum going on here.

And here’s the recipe from Whole Foods (hee-hee):

Makes about 30

These truffles pair pumpkin with gingersnap and graham cracker crumbs. For the best results, chill truffles until you’re ready to serve them. (NOTE: When rolling them into balls, rub a little ice on your hands first.)

Ingredients

2½ cups white chocolate chunks
1/3 cup gingersnap cookie crumbs, plus more for garnish
1/4 cup canned pumpkin purée
1/4 cup graham cracker crumbs, plus more for garnish
1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar (maybe a little more would make them thicker)
1/2 teaspoon orange zest
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon (I added a bit more)
Pinch of fine salt
2 ounces cream cheese, softened

Method

Melt 1/2 cup of the chocolate in a double boiler over medium-low heat or in the microwave for about 1 minute. Stir often to keep the chocolate from burning. Transfer to a large bowl. Add gingersnap crumbs, pumpkin, graham cracker crumbs, sugar, zest, cinnamon, salt and cream cheese and beat with an electric mixer until smooth. Transfer to a shallow bowl, cover and chill until just solid enough to roll into balls, about 2 hours.

Line a large sheet tray with parchment paper. Melt remaining 2 cups chocolate and transfer to a small, deep bowl. Roll 1 heaping teaspoon of the pumpkin mixture into a ball in your hands, then drop into the chocolate. Working quickly, gently spoon chocolate over to coat. Using a small spoon or fork, lift the truffle out of the chocolate, shake off excess and transfer to prepared sheet tray. Dollop a bit of extra chocolate on any parts that remain exposed, then sprinkle a few gingersnap or graham cracker crumbs over the top, if you like. Repeat process with remaining pumpkin mixture and chocolate, then chill truffles until chocolate is completely set, about 1 hour.

Let me know if you try them and love them (or hate them)!!

MJ Puts the Petal to the Metal from The Find!

This has got to be one of the sweetest handbags I’ve seen recently from Marc by Marc Jacobs. The Petal to the Metal leather satchel ($200 at Net-a-Porter) comes in a shade of tobacco called ‘newsprint’, yet it’s style shouts indulgent cupcake from Magnolia Bakery. Overall this is a charming bag because of its compact size. Clearly it is an example of the affordable whimsy and wit so clearly defined and redefined again each season at Marc by Marc Jacobs.

The Petal to the Metal leather satchel is a pint sized messenger bag adorned with a small bird on its front flap. The front flap is accentuated with a zipper detailing around the edge, although not functional it adds an interesting texture and outlines the shape of the bag. Inside is a pouch compartment lined in an ’80s inspired geometric twill print. The closure is secured by a magnet on the outside and a small non-functional strap loops under the gold-toned dove. I am not sure why the purely aesthetic strap does not cross over the entire bag, it does dilute the look of the design a bit. The dove has is embossed with a tiny circle so small you’ll need a magnifying glass to read the Marc by Marc Jacobs logo. The long strap and makes this messenger bag perfect for carrying only your most basic essentials. Overall I do like the look of this bag and it would make a perfect bag for a post-holiday trip abroad or a charming gift for aspiring fashionista teen. This whimsical bag is also the ideal accessory for adding a bit of eclectic fun to your casual weekend look. Pair with an oversized tee and or blazer, skinny black leggings and some oxford flats.

Baghaus.com Review

I’m a handbag fanatic that is no secret to anyone. Big, small, purple, or orange it doesn’t matter. I just love them in anyway size, shape or color. Handbags are my best friend and I love to buy them. So when I learned I was the winner to Baghaus.com’s October Handbag Makeover contest I was thrilled and very excited! Here is a little bit about the company:

“Baghaus.com (pronounced Bag-House) is the premiere shopping destination for stylishly chic purses and handbags. From the pages of People Style Watch to Cosmo, trend spotters and fashion provocateurs alike are buzzing about our incredible selection.

Based in Los Angeles, it is our pride and joy to supply fashion-savvy women with must-have styles at a great value. Our attention to quality and detail is second to none, so rest assured you will be impressed with the glamour and luxury that is a cornerstone of every Baghaus accessory. “

I’m loving this site more and more everyday. I haven’t been able to shop as of yet as Christmas has just passed but I will be. The selection is amazing as well as the prices and the easy navigation of the site.

The bag I won was a surprise. I was hoping for something that would be great for the holidays and was thrilled when I received a red bag. The Lusty Cabernet Bag in Red is roomy, stylish and was perfect for my holiday attire. This bag is less than $40.00 and has some great features. Here are those features:

~Made of high quality gingham print cloth
~Brass toned hardware
~Zippered and drawstring closure
~Dual carrying handles
~Metal stud feet
~Interior zippered center divider
~Interior:two open pockets,zippered pocket

Like I said amazing features and the perfect bag for mom as it holds many items but it’s not to big and bulky. I’ve gotten a lot of great compliments on this bag. I love the color, the funkiness and the size. I’m loving the Stupid Handbag Deal of the Week area as well. This is where you’ll find great deals at amazing prices. This adorable bag is a bag I want and I’m hoping it’s still here in a couple weeks. It’s only $35.00!

Baghaus.com is a new site to me and I am really glad I found it. On top of the great selection of products they also offer 110% Price Protection Policy.
If you find an item for a lower price on another web site or in a retail store, they will refund you 110% of the difference between the lower price and their price. Not looking for a handbag? They offer designer diaper bags as well!

Thank you again to Baghaus for this great bag and I’ll be a shopper for life! Make sure you keep up to date by following Baghaus on twitter as well!
